Work Requirement Starts Soon

The FoodShare work requirement for Able Bodied Adults without Dependents went into effect in July 2014 in Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha counties. It will be rolled out in the rest of the state on April 1, 2015.

FoodShare Helps Seniors Stay Healthy

When Ann retired, she didn’t think she would have to make hard choices between paying the bills and buying food. She had saved up while she was working as a public school teacher, and she took a part-time job at a technical college after she retired. Unfortunately, some difficult family circumstances led to her finances not being what she expected for her “golden years.” She was having a tough time stretching her budget to pay all the bills and keep food on the table.

Ann's story is becoming more and more common. About 1 in 12 seniors now experience food insecurity, which is double the number who faced food insecurity in 2001. There are a number of reasons seniors may have hard time putting food on the table.

Barriers to Enrolling in FoodShare

FoodShare is an important part of our community safety net. It helps participants stretch their budgets and keep healthy food on the table during tough times. Unfortunately, about 1 in 6 people who are eligible for FoodShare don’t enroll.

There are many reasons why people who are eligible do not enroll in FoodShare. The most common reason is because they do not realize they are eligible. Some may not know about FoodShare. Others know about the program but assume that they make too much money or do not meet other eligibility guidelines. Keep reading →
